Digital and offset printing

If you bring your own designs to be printed they have to follow some configuration guidelines that are essential for a professional finish.

Used software

Not every software is suitable for artwork production. We can distinguish three big families of software products used by professionals:

  • Vectorial graphic design software products such as Illustrator or Freehand
  • Image editing software products such as Photoshop
  • Documents layout software products such as Indesign or QuarkXpress
Programs like Word Power Point or Publisher are not the more recommendable software to design and they give a lot of problems when printing in offset.

Formats

If the artworks are sent in Illustrator, Indesign or Freehand format they must have the types with path selected to avoid unpleasant surprises such as typography problems. Pdf is one of the best formats to deliver files for future printing.

Resolution

The images or the formats saved as images ( for example jpg or tiff) should have a 300 dpi resolution. Any inferior resolution may lead to poor printing quality. The images or logotypes extracted from internet do not have sufficient resolution for printing. GIF and PNG formats are not suitable for use in a print production workflow.

Bleeds, safety margin and crop marks

It’s necessary to keep a minimum of space between the texts, logotypes or design elements to be printed and the edge of the document. These should not be placed at less than four millimetres from the edge of the paper.

How to print

This is due to the fact that the display reads the colours in RGB and the printers and the imagesetter in CMYK. The colour reflected in a screen test is only simulated. Only with a print test the colour can be set.

If the artwork has background set up with bleed this will have to extend at least two or three millimetres beyond the edge of the document.

How to print

Colours

The colours displayed on the screen undergo important changes when printed on paper..This is due to the fact that the display reads the colours in RGB and the printers and the imagesetter in CMYK. The colour reflected in a screen test is only simulated. Only with a print test the colour can be set.

How to print

The colour also undergo variations depending on the kind of printing, whether offset or digital, or if it is printed using printer or plotter.

Corrections

Be sure to deliver your artwork already corrected and without spelling mistakes. . If the design is not included in the order, it will be printed with the misspellings or it shall be paid an extraordinary cost to correct the originals (provided that the document is not closed and it still allows modifications).
